Molasses – A Valuable Raw Material for Industry and Animal Feed
Molasses is a by-product of sugar production from sugar cane or sugar beet. In the final production step, after the crystallised sugar has been centrifuged, a syrupy residue remains that contains over 50% sugar, but which cannot be crystallised any further.
The sugar content of molasses depends on various factors, including the quality of the raw materials, the climate and the technical equipment of the sugar factories. On average, 25–35 kg of molasses are produced per tonne of sugar beets and 45–50 kg per tonne of sugarcane. The main component is sucrose, a natural disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose that plants produce as an energy reserve.
Molasses is a highly versatile raw material: it serves as a valuable energy source for animal feed, a prized flavour carrier in mixed rations, and a key component in the fermentation industry as well as in various other applications. Thanks to its composition, it is in high demand worldwide — efficient, natural and versatile.
